Doing Business Worldwide: Financing Import and Export Transactions

Documentary credits, documentary collections, guarantees: The hedging and financing of export and investment projects play a central role in the development of foreign markets. Many foreign projects are mainly aimed at risk hedging, but access to debt financing is also becoming increasingly relevant. Companies in many sectors increasingly rely on business relations with partners abroad and thus realize more and more import as well as export transactions. We are happy to support you in how you can map foreign trade financing in SAP. We can also advise you on how to mitigate the financial risks associated with foreign business.

Letter of credit

In case of a documentary letter of credit, the bank makes a payment on behalf of the importer provided that the exporter presents the documents corresponding to the letter of credit in return. Payments are therefore only made once the agreed documents are available. Compared to documentary collection, a letter of credit is more secure for the exporter than collection, since the importer’s bank promises payment.​

Documentary

Documentary collection is particularly suitable for foreign transactions in which exporters and importers already have a trusting business relationship. In this case, the delivery documents are handed over to the importer either only after receipt of payment or against acceptance of a bill of exchange or a promise of payment.

Bank Guarantee

A bank guarantee is an irrevocable and independent agreement whereby a bank transfers a specified amount to a specified beneficiary upon written request by the beneficiary if the customer fails to make the agreed payments. It is therefore a type of promise.
